Violence Against Women in India

As a counsellor,  it is my observation that deep disturbance and disharmony is created between marital partners due to domestic violence in India. There are numerous stories of women who trapped in abusive relationships and their never intolerable plights at the hands of husbands and the extended family members. There are various reasons cited for such violence against women, beginning from the simple reasons that there is excess salt in the dish to the issues of dowry.

One of the major issue in marital counselling in India is domestic violence, mostly men verbally or physically abusing their wives. Many of the time the abused women(and men) keep the issue as a secret one in order to protect social acceptance and respect in the society.

I would like to share a real incident happened in one of my friend's life. Her life was normal at the initail stage after marriage for 3 months. Her husband was in need of money and he demanded dowry again after marriage. Her husband used to treat her like a slave at home by  Battering, verbal abusing, etc...  She never shared this with their parents or friends till their relationship ends. She kept the issue as a secret. Finally this issue ends in her death.

Not only in rural areas, it  is also happening in cities. Well educated women too hide these kind of issues. From my observation, women has to bring out this issues at the inital stage not at the critical stage. In spite of these realities there is conscious and unconscious denial of the seriousness of this situation in the Indian society.

Domestic Violence Act is there to prevent and conserve women's life, but very little are aware of this Act. Women of India, be aware of domestic violences. Verbal, emotional, sexual and physical violence diminish the quality of marital relationship and deeply disturbs the peaceful life.

Violence dies when it ceases to evoke response from its object. Mahatma Gandhi.

I don't think much of men who beat on their wives, let alone kill them. If you can't get along, get a divorce for crying out loud.

Being divorced beats the heck out of being dead or a murder. So good for both parties involved.

Yeah, I do agree Divorce is the only solution. It is the final termination of marital union. I would like to share my opinion. As a counsellor, we use to suggest them to apply for Divorce, but we can't give decision. The decision has to be taken buy the client. Even though after counselling most of the women try to live with her husband. In India the society plays a vital role here. Once a women get divorce her future is a question mark. The moral is to live with one. One for one. Everyone neglects to marry her again(Not all some may marry) Again she will be a burden to her parents(old aged). So automatically she starts living alone till her death.
If she delivered a baby or two, she starts thinking about thier future. So she try to adjust him  for ever. By keeping all these in their mind women neglects to bring out their issues out to a third person. They keep the issues as a secret and trying to live with him. What my opinion is Men of India has to change them. They must respect and love each other. Why it is happening so? Let me explain. From olden days the culture of India taught women has to obey men. Even in education men are given priority and parents wont allow girls to learn in olden days. This situation has been changed and girls are allowed for education later on. Now  men and women are equal. But those olden ideas are still hidden in some of their minds. So those kind of men treats their wives as slave. Both men and society should give a soultion.

It's either not as prevelent as it was in the 60's and 70's or, people are better at hiding it. I don't believe it's as easy to hide these days as it used to be. Women are no longer confined to the house and kept barefoot and pregnant. Many men down here however do still view their women as property as they were taught to do by their fathers and grandfathers. Some traditions are stubbornly held onto for generations by weak minded ignorant animals. It's a well understood fact that when you keep the educational levels intentionally low, you end up with this kind of mentality. Some traditions need to be gotten rid of in my opinion and ignorance is one of them.

Abuse of any sort is by all means sad to hear about.  Getting women to speak out and do something about changing such behaviors can be difficult since their self esteem tends to be beaten out them also.  I do know a man here in the US who got divorsed due to his exwife's violence towards him.  Are there any groups in India to help these women of abuse?
